01 — The company

AS Scan-Wood, of Skotterud, works with timber and how it is measured.

The company sits at Repsetvegen 155 in Skotterud, a few kilometres from the Swedish border in Eidskog. Its business is wood: what a log actually holds, and how you find that out before the saw does.

Nothing about that is settled by a website — species, dimension, moisture, delivery and price are settled in conversation. So this page holds what a page can usefully hold: a statement of who the company is, a line back to whoever opens the post, and one short account of something the company finds worth measuring. There is also a game on the store, further down, for reasons that are explained there.

02 — One measurable thing

A circle laid over a bend covers twice the track it would cover on a straight.

This one came out of measuring, which is what the company does, and it holds anywhere a reach of fixed radius is laid against a route: a sprinkler beside a path, a camera on a corridor, a watchman on a road. Move the circle to a corner and the route passes through it twice. The gain is not a matter of feel — it has an exact ceiling, and the ceiling is two.

Click anywhere on the field, or drag the marker, to move the reach.

1.89×against the same reach, the same distance from a straight

Set at this distance from a straight stretch, the same circle would hold only 4.47 tiles of track. The bend folds the route back through the reach, and the second crossing is free.

The covered length is the chord arithmetic, segment by segment: project the centre onto the line, take the perpendicular distance d, and the chord inside a reach r is 2√(r²−d²), clipped to the ends of the segment. Checked against a dense sampling of four million points along the track, which agreed to four decimal places at every position tried. Two results are worth writing down: the ratio against a straight placement has a maximum of exactly 2.000, reached here at 2.7 tiles from both legs of the bend; and the best corner placement holds 8.485 tiles of track against 6.000 for the best possible placement on a straight, which is a factor of √2. Absent by design: there are no enemies here, no towers to buy, no waves and no score. What is measured here is one circle laid against one corner. Defending anything is a separate occupation, and it is not carried on at this address.

03 — Also on the store

Which is roughly where the game came from.

Having worked the arithmetic above out on paper, it seemed a shame to leave it there. Trollvakt is a small tower-defence game: a mountain pass, a winding track, and towers you place along it — and a good placement wins for exactly the reason section 02 gives. No connection is ever opened, no sign-in exists, and nothing inside it is for sale.

Timber and company matters: post@scan-wood.digital. The game and these pages: vakt@scan-wood.digital. Letters reach Repsetvegen 155 in Skotterud.

Somebody opens both and answers them, so two or three plain sentences about what you need will get you further than any form.
